As I was searching for a name for the hotel, I started with the idea of honoring the Mayan land we are located on. Nestled in the virgin jungle along the cenote route of Puerto Morelos, Mexico, it felt fitting to connect the hotel’s name with the ancient wisdom of the region.
I began searching for the Mayan word for “wisdom.” However, I quickly discovered that the Mayan language, as it’s understood today, lacks direct translations for many concepts, including “wisdom.”
During one of my searches, a word caught my eye: Hokhmah. Something about the spelling—the repeated H structure—stood out immediately. I felt drawn to it. As I started reading more about the word, I was deeply intrigued by its meaning. Hokhmah is a Hebrew and Aramaic word that translates to “wisdom”, but it goes much deeper than that. It represents divine wisdom, often seen as a feminine aspect of the divine—something that has been historically minimized or hidden in patriarchal traditions.
In Kabbalistic tradition, Hokhmah refers to one of the divine emanations, symbolizing the first spark of creation and the connection between divine wisdom and the material world. This instantly resonated with me because it perfectly aligned with what I was trying to create with the hotel: a place where people could reconnect with their own divine wisdom, the natural world, and the sacred balance of masculine and feminine energy within themselves.
Hokhmah also represents the universal connection to nature, which is integral to the retreat space we’ve built in the jungle. The idea that wisdom flows through nature, that it’s not just in books or spiritual teachings but also in the trees, the air, the cenotes surrounding us, was exactly the message I wanted to convey through the hotel’s name.
Then there was the idea of reclaiming the divine feminine, which felt so important in today’s world. The connection of Hokhmah to the feminine aspect of God—which, over time, had been downplayed—made it even more meaningful. I knew in that moment that this would be the name. It wasn’t just a label—it was a statement. A call to balance, to wisdom, to the feminine and masculine working together to create something abundant and sacred. It felt right, like the name had chosen us as much as we had chosen it.
